About Cheryl

Cheryl Long, Texas Artist

A professional artist, native Texan Cheryl Long graduated from the University of Texas with a BFA in Fine Arts.

Education and Early Career (1984-1989)

Building on her early success, Cheryl applied her fine arts formal education to visually capturing the spirit of the West.

Cheryl's magnificent paintings, one-of-a-kind creations and mixed-media works of art have been acquired by curators and avid collectors.

For many years, Cheryl has used various mediums to capture “the West of today.” Honors and awards have included "Best of Show" at Durango Photographic Salon, Durango, Colorado, in Summer 1989.

That same year, 1989, she formed her original company, “Pure West by Cheryl Long,” as a garment company for the romantic cowboy or cowgirl-at-heart. Using her own photographs of working ranches, Cheryl combined classical painting techniques to romanticize her documentary photographs. These painterly images were then applied to t-shirts, home furnishings, posters, and notecards.

In Fall 1990 she was commissioned to create a signature poster by "Durango Cowboy Gathering."

More recently, Cheryl has developed her accessory line from actual antiques: European velvets, recycled found objects, and Cheryl's own printed and sculpted appliqued leathers. Long's Pure West creations now include a collection for home and a ladies' accessory line. She created her one-of-a-kind jewelry line in 1996, using her ranch mixed-media photos in “The Original Reversible Photo-Pendant.” This design concept has become an international phenomenon.

The vision extended well beyond garments and accessories as she built on the foundation of her formal art education as well as experience creating photographs, posters and paintings. Today, her works of art can be found in many corporate and celebrity collections. Her one-of-a-kind wearable art and accessory line has been featured in celebrity award shows and worn by Hollywood and popular music stars.

Now Cheryl has come full circle -- back to her first love, Painting.

She produces spectacular, monumental landscapes and brilliantly patterned abstracts, that incorporate hidden messages and symbols to stir memories for the viewer.

Long's first big show came in 1984, in her senior year at University of Texas, when Laguna Gloria, the major art museum in Austin at that time, invited her to show her work in the “Texas Only” show.

She earned countless honors and awards, including a stint on QVC TV “Texas Design” and numerous juried museum shows, including for many years the Western Design Conference in Cody, Wyoming and Jackson Hole, Wyoming as well as two U.S. Presidential Inaugural “Texas Best” exhibitions in Washington, DC.

Texas Artist Cheryl Long's paintings and mixed medium creations can be found in many corporate and museum collections, at juried shows, and at galleries including Objects of Art, Santa Fe, NM, and in Central Texas at the Pure Art Gallery on the Square in historic Fayetteville, only minutes down the road from Round Top.
